You’ve heard of recycling but now it’s time to get on board with “upcycling” – the sustainable way of revamping old furniture.
Recycling, upcycling, what’s the difference and how is it related to anything other than your weekly rubbish collection? Recycling is the term used to describe any material that can be re-used and converted into another material whereas upcycling specifically refers to re-using a product to create another of higher quality or value than the original.
Upcycling has become a “buzz-word” particularly in the interior design industry; a trend in the market for vintage pieces of furniture has become a trend for transforming these pieces into something modern.
Perhaps you have an old chest passed down generations and you don’t want to throw it out or perhaps you want a new look for your home but can’t afford it? That’s where upcycling comes in.
One cost effective way to transform any piece of furniture is by using foil. At Dawes and Green we use RENOLIT EXOFOL. Created almost 30 years ago in Germany the classic film was initially only used to give windows and doors a re-design. The film’s durability made it perfect for a quick refresh of the outside frames; this is because the PVC films are twin layered. In the base layer the colour pigments use Solar Shield Technology which means excessive heat doesn’t build up meaning the frames can withstand the elements.
Today, the film can be used for so much more than that.
Dawes and Green have been using the film to make interiors look premium without the premium price. The film is an adhesive that can be used on a range of surfaces including, kitchen cupboards, large appliances (washing machines, dishwashers), tables, window frames and more.
Whether you’re looking to freshen up an existing design or overhaul one, Dawes and Green can accommodate. Choose from a new wood look, marble, matte finish and more all with the ease of film.
It’s not only cost that should be considered but also upcycling’s environmental impact. We have become accustomed to ‘throwaway culture’. Products are mass manufactured and we replace them as quickly as we buy them. Rapidly changing trends whether that be in the fashion, food, or home design industry lead to a society of overproduction and overconsumption.
Reduce what goes to the landfill by committing to upcycling. Not only will the planet thank you for it but so will your pocket. Using film is the ideal option as you’ll be contributing to a better environment whilst achieving a truly bespoke look as you customise any piece of furniture.
